Four Benefits Of A Ductless Heat Pump System

by Howard Barnett

If you're in the market for a new heating system, or if you're adding a new room or addition to your home, you might be overwhelmed by all of the heating system options on the market today. One good choice, especially for an older home, is a ductless heat pump system.

What is a ductless heat pump system?

A ductless heat pump system, as the name implies, circulates heated air throughout your home without the traditional duct system of pipes, vents and registers. Such systems, also called mini-split systems, have two components--an outside unit that transfers heated (and cooled) air into your home and an inside unit that circulates the air throughout your living space. Mini-split systems are compact and up to four, individual zone or room (indoor) units can be tied to a single outdoor transfer unit.

Advantages of a ductless heat pump system

1. An affordable option for older homes or new additions. If you're looking to convert the heating system in your older home from a hot water or radiant heat system to a more modern and efficient system, opting for a ductless heat pump system will save you the cost (and mess) of retro-fitting your home with a duct system. A mini-slit system is also a good choice for a new room or addition that you may not want to tie into your existing furnace system.

2. Provides both heated and cooled air. A heat pump system can be used to circulate heated air in the winter and cooled air in the summer. Although the initial cost of this type of system is usually higher than a forced air furnace, it is less than having to buy both a furnace and a central air conditioning system.

3. Kinder to the environment. Because a heat pump uses naturally-heated (and cooled) air from outside your home instead of using energy to create that heat, this type of system uses much less energy than a traditional forced air furnace.

4. Helps reduce your energy bills. Since a mini-split system transfers naturally-heated air, it uses less energy to produce heat, thus reducing your monthly electric bill.

While a ductless heat pump system may not be the right choice for every homeowner, this type of system is energy-efficient, kind to the environment and both heats and cools air, making it necessary to buy only one system, not two. If you haven't thought about a mini-split system, it's worth taking a look.
