Paint Your Home's Exterior Vinyl Window Frames

by Howard Barnett

If you recently had vinyl-framed windows installed in your home, clean and prepare the outer frames before painting them a color that complements the exterior of your house by completing the following steps.

  • ladder
  • degreasing agent
  • sponge
  • water hose
  • soft cloth
  • low-grit sandpaper
  • hand sander
  • tack cloth
  • newspaper
  • painters tape
  • can of primer (for exteriors)
  • can of paint (for exteriors)
  • paint stirrer
  • paint tray
  • foam brush
  • narrow paintbrush

Clean And Sand The Vinyl

Place a ladder next to the outside of your home. Climb the ladder and apply a few drops of a degreasing agent to a damp sponge and wipe it over each vinyl surface. Eliminating oily residue will help the primer and paint adhere evenly. Dry the vinyl frames with a soft cloth. Lightly sand each window frame with a low grit piece of sandpaper that has been secured to a hand sanding tool.

Move the sander back and forth over the vinyl until any rough spots have been removed. Wipe the vinyl off with a tack cloth in order to eliminate fine particles that were left behind from the sanding process.

Cover The Windowpanes And Apply Primer And Paint

Secure sheets of newspaper to each windowpane with pieces of painter's tape. Mix the contents of a can of exterior primer and pour the primer into a paint tray. Use a foam brush to apply an even coat of primer over each vinyl frame. Use a narrow paintbrush to cover intricate details in each frame if are not able to cover them sufficiently with the foam brush.

Mix the contents of a can of exterior paint and pour it into a clean paint tray. Apply one or two coats of paint over the dry primer with the foam brush and narrow paintbrush. Wait for the first coat of paint to dry all of the way before adding a second coat over it.

Remove The Newspaper And Keep The Frames Maintained

Test the surface of the paint with one of your fingertips to make sure that it is not tacky. If the second coat has dried thoroughly, remove the tape that is holding the newspaper sheets in place. The freshly-painted frames will improve the appearance of the outside of your home. Maintain the painted vinyl by wiping it off occasionally with a sponge that has mild soap that has been mixed with water added to it. Rinse the clean vinyl off with plain water before drying each frame with a soft cloth.
