Remodeling Your Kitchen? 2 Countertop Choices You Have

by Howard Barnett

If you are remodeling your kitchen, part of this may be replacing your cabinets and countertops. If so, when it comes to countertops you have many choices. This can make it difficult to choose what would be best for your kitchen. To prevent you from making the wrong choice, information is given below about three types of countertops.

Wood Countertops

Only hardwoods are made for wood countertops, such as walnut, cherry, oak, or maple. This will ensure the wood is durable. What the countertop color is depends on the type of wood you choose. For example, walnut can range from a dark brown to a yellow while cherry has a deep red tone.

Wood offers many benefits, such as being hygienic, because the wood has an inherent that is built in to protect the wood from bacteria. Wood countertops can also be repaired much easier than other types of countertops. If there is damage you only have to sand the area to remove the dents or marks to smooth the surface.

Wood is porous, however, which means water and other liquids can seep into the wood. Because of this, you need to have a professional install the countertops for you. The professional will apply a protective sealant on the wood to protect it.

Granite

Another option you have is granite. This countertop is much more expensive, but it can make your kitchen look elegant. Granite is a hard and natural stone. Each granite slab looks different so you will have a unique countertop when it comes to designs and colors. You can find granite that has black or white hues along with pink to red hues.  If you choose granite, however, make sure all the material comes from the same slab to ensure it is uniform in color and design.

If you properly seal your granite countertop this will seal the surface from bacteria, and the countertop will not get dirty or dusty as easily. This makes maintenance much easier and no chemicals are required to clean the countertop as you only need to use soap and water.

Granite is also resistant to scratches and is durable and strong. You also do not have to worry about heat damage from hot pans. If the granite is sealed properly you will not have to worry about the granite getting stained from foods and liquids.
